Gale Webb Surprise Party - June 23, 2009

Gale Webb - Surprise Party - June 23, 2009 Gale Webb Extreme Sports and Air Show

I will always remember Tuesday, June 23, 2009, with a big smile. That was the day 300 friends, family, riders and sponsors gave a very, very special woman a surprise birthday party. That woman is Gale Webb, my sister. The day started as any other day when Gale was getting ready to put on her Gale Webb Extreme Sports and Air Show. It was a very warm day, and Gale and her husband Jim went to the show site - The Diamond, home of the Storm minor league baseball team. The Storm baseball team was hosting the minor league All-Star game. The President of the Storm, asked Gale to bring her show there, and he was also going to bring in athletes that competed in the XGames. They had a lot of things going on for their pre-game fun.

Gale Webb - Surprise Party - June 23, 2009 Gale's riders for the day were Willie, Mike, Matt, Dave, Sean, Austen, Taner and Dakota, Hunter and Savannah. Little did Gale know, as we were preparing for the two shows, guests were arriving on the other side of the stadium - getting ready to surprise her during her last show. The anticipation of what was about to happen, almost made me sick. I just sat at the sound system with tears in my eyes, wondering how Gale would react when she saw all her riders from 25 years of shows standing on her jump box. That was big enough - but I knew also standing there would be representatives from all of her sponsors. Could we pull off the surprise?

When we came to the end of the show - for the big finale - Dave Hacker from Sport Chalet - came out of the crowd, took Gale's mic, turned her around to face the crowd - and made an announcement - I can see it in my mind - frame by frame - then, we turned Gale around to face the surprise of her life time. There was so much emotion - crying, screaming, hugging, laughing all being done at the same time. It was beautiful. We were all there for Gale - our hero - our friend. The entire day was perfect - and I will always be grateful to the 300 friends of Gale who kept this party a secret for 2 months!!! Thanks to all of you for making this happen and for caring about Gale the way I do!!

Hello Russ, I continue to enjoy your website. So many fun things to look at/read.

May I suggest a blog section to state your views and invite others to state there’s on varying topics. For instance, I’m sure you agree that skateboarding is all about freedom of expression. You can be yourself, hop on a skateboard and know that the sky is the limit. Many people are drawn to skateboarding because they feel that they don’t fit in to other sports. Said persons start skateboarding and find a world that accepts them. It’s a beautiful thing.

Unfortunately, there are many that believe skateboarding is ‘cool’ and if you don’t fit into their interpretation of the art of skateboarding you are somehow ‘wrong’. This could be as general as the style of riding you choose, or as completely petty as your manner of dress.

Having skateboarded since 1973, I know for a fact that skateboarding belongs only to the individual rider. Any attempt to put skateboarding into set parameters DOES NOT belong in the sport.

Many magazines, TV shows, internet sites, and (sadly) skateboard companies themselves promote the idea that to skateboard you have to be aware of the current ‘trends’ and apply them. May I suggest that awareness of fashion/technique/style trends in skateboarding should be viewed as poison to the sport. The only ‘uncools’ in skateboarding are skating unsafely around others, thinking you have a ‘right-of-way’ for any reason, condescension by way of trendiness, and violence.

Skate often, skate safe, skate with confidence, and skate with freedom of expression.
Skate on Russ!

Thanks for the suggestion - you are the reason this section now exists on this Web site.

Hello Russ,

I know it's been a long while and I know that you probably won't remember me or any of this at all but I use to see you all the time skateboarding at Cherry Park (Bixby Park) in Long Beach. Many other local kids and I use to follow you around the park especially around the stage area trying to mimic all of your moves and jumps. We would even follow you over to your place on 2nd street to hang out and talk about skate stuff. I was only about 8 or 9 at the time myself and I remember wishing I could be like you and do more than one 360 at a time...you did them so easily!!! You would always tell me to keep trying and eventually I was able to knock out about 5 or so before losing it. You liked me for some reason and I think it was because I was just a little guy with a fearless attitude!

I remember you were always being a really cool guy...and you even gave me my some PowerPaw wheels to put on my clear fiberglass skateboard that my father had specially made for me. There were many other kids there that day at your place but for some reason I was the lucky recipient of them and a I couldn't wait to get home and get my dad to put them on my board. I also remember a fews times that we use to all ride the tunnel that ran underneath Ocean Blvd from the park to the beach all the time as well. Those were the very best of times back then when we spent hours trying to improve our moves!

I even use to brag to everyone back then at school (Robert Louis Stevenson) that you were my friend but no one ever believed me that I even knew you because you were on TV by then doing the GT Skateboard Commercials. I wish I still had my GT Skateboard now which you had signed for me back then which was stolen because I was being a kid and accidentally left it outside overnight. I use to have a lite green colored one that I got as a Christmas gift from my uncle and I think they came in a 3 or 4 different colors back them. I am so sorry now that I allowed for that to happen or I would have saved it for my son's who are both little skater dudes today themselves now following other skater kids that you paved the way for so many years ago.

Anyway, I just thought to take a moment to share with you about some of the moments when you took to the time to share with me and some of the other nieghborhood kids...back when we were both much younger and were once the original members of the board and you were the chairman of the board at Cherry Park. I hope you are doing well and staying cool my friend...thanks for the good times and for being such a great role model to so many. Please feel free to share this story with your internet viewers as they should all know that even when you were larger than life, when you were head over wheels you were always down to earth.

PS: My name is Angelo Lioudakis and I am now 42, married with 2 sons. I actually use to live on Second Street & Esperanza about 5 or so blocks from Cherry Park during the 70's and my uncle attended at CSULB the same years as you did. I look forward to hearing from you anytime...Peace to you & yours!

Thanks to all the Bixby Park skate kids for the motivation to enter the 1975 Del Mar Bahne/Cadillac National Contest.
